Rs. 500 and Rs 1000 notes scrapped: We don’t need to eat Dhoklas, yet!

Rs. 500 and Rs 1000 notes scrapped: the black money crackdown news is an avalanche of  a news.

Gosh! Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes not legal tender any more!

I shiver as I write this post.  Why? Because I am camping downhill the path of the snowball? Because I am a global aggregator of black money? Nope. It’s because I wonder what’s available in that’s worth less than 500? Rs 500 and Rs. 1000 notes are like denominations of Rs. 50 and Rs. 100 of our yesteryears! You can’t just do without them. They are your wallet’s best friends!

As per a recent Mint report, the large value notes – those which are greater than 100 – Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 – constitute for more than 84% of the money in circulation in the country.

This only confirms the issue I’m highlighting. There  simply aren’t enough wads of Rs. 100 to replace  the 500 and 1000 denominations.

Corruption Issues

Rs. 500 and Rs 1000 notes scrapped: We dont need to eat Dhoklas, yet!
Enjoy khamans and dhoklas on black money !

There was another demonetization of the currency earlier in 1978. Rs. 1000 notes were suddenly considered not a legal tender. They simply stood cancelled one night. Just like that. No time given! That was during the time of Prime Minister Morarji Desai. Lot of black money was wiped out. It’s said that folks in Surat ate dhoklas and khamans the next day on Rs. 1000 notes! Tissue paper value. And that’s completely true!

But what about it?

Did that stem corruption, bribery and black money? Did that wipe out the (not really) hidden black undercurrent of the economy? Babus just changed their instruments, twice aggressive as earlier, as they had to cover up for their losses. Babudom and Corruption thrived like never before.

This time the babus & the corrupt would lose a little, probably, for there’s time till Dec 30th. But what would stop the babus from continuing their practices with newer, crisper notes? What would make them change their behaviour? What would it take to bring about ‘integrity’ in this country?

As an aside, I think the traffic cops are  the smartest of the bunch… Rs. 50 and Rs. 100!

Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes demonetization, crackdown, is welcome, certainly. We are going to have the new notes now – the more secure and colourful Rs.500 and Rs. 2000.

But I can only hope the Government would introduce tracking methods and stringent punishment so that the newer notes don’t become another set of crisper tools for the fiefdoms and arrogance of those in  authority and power.

A daring move. A move,  much like the exploits in Operation Jai Mata Di.

Lost innocence and basic rights

While our kids are in school building up their future, ensconced in the comforts of … , barefoot, begging around in the rain or shine, thousands of kids suffer. Wonder what is their fault? Do they even know anything else but struggle? Is there something called basic rights for all? Right to education?
Wonder if we should blame the Creator or its creation? Both seem to be at fault.

Focial, are you?

(sometime in the future … )

“Good facebook”, I greet rubbing my eyes as I wake up in the morning.

And the app on my phone picks up my voice. Meticulously it goes through the new posts of last 7 hours and ‘likes’ them alternately, taking care that within 2 or 3 such mornings, all my friends and family have at least one like by me.

This artificial intelligence based app keeps me in touch with all my uncles, aunts, siblings, nephews and close friends by ‘liking’ them all…, learns from me, and keeps me in the loop with regards to what it’s liking, etc. so that some day I’m not caught off guard.

(Really? Is there that AI app?
Search for it – or – read the very first line – in italics)

Anyways the point is, we seem to be living in a ‘hurried’ sort of a . There’s hardly any time to travel distances, meet people, visit friends, talk on the phone, etc –  which could now be defined as parts of the Old Socializing Approaches. Even writing emails somehow now seems archaic…

FB has spawned the New Socializing Methods. On one platform you can see what your friends and family are upto, what pics they are sharing, their current status, their current likings, etc. And if you are social enough, you will like them, may be even drop in a comment, and they’ll like and comment on your updates in return – the whole positive feedback cycle ofliking starts thus. That’s the new social interaction method on Facebook – being Focial.

You like, they like. You comment, they comment. Congratulations! And you are now an important element in the fociety – you are a highly focial animal.

Well if you are the recluse type, you might not want to like anything or comment upon anything. In typical olden socialization methods, that would tantamount to you sitting alone on a sofa in a corner of a room while a party is going on and people are interacting with each other. People will still attempt to talk with you but eventually they will give up if they don’t have a good enough response.

In the new fociety’s focializing methods, this would be akin to you not liking their updates or posts, and vice versa. If you really hate someone now, for instance, just don’t like him or her. It’s that simple.

And if you are a realized person – the kinda guy who sees triviality in all things extant, or someone who wants to shed all relations and take up a harsh sanyaas… rrrelax.

In the new fociety, thanks to the focialization approaches it has spawned, you don’t really need to  renunciate stuff! It’s become much easier…

Deleting your facebook account or just not having one will suffice!

What 10-year plan?!

“So how do you see yourself 10 years from now?” she asked, her lovely, long eyelashes doing little to blunt her deep, sadistic gaze that cut right through me. I somehow always knew that this WOULD be one of the questions – it always is! But this time I didn’t prepare for this one. I maintained a false calm about me as I bought split seconds before coming forth with the most apt answer.

Inside me, my neurons had already recoiled, dug and traveled millions of layers deep to the first time I had confronted a similar question, 10 years back. Deep inside, at that time, I had wanted to be a rock star, and a business magnate; both combined. I’d have a big home with lush gardens, a giant factory where I’d have thousands of people working for me, working upon one of my innovations. At night, I’d have a band and I’d be playing my own compositions. And I’d be living with my girl as well.
But well, I couldn’t share my innermost dreams with someone I had just met at an interview table, could I? I also knew just what to say; just what she wanted to hear! I fabricated the most brilliant of responses – ambition and aggression par-comparison. I got the job!

Now, back to the present, another batch of neurons volunteered with the ferocity of warriors. Upon finding nothing worthwhile in the deep recesses of my mind, they had got ready to sacrifice their conscience for want of a satisfactory ’10 years from now’ concoction.
I waived them off. I didn’t need their help. I just smiled at the lady with lovely, long lashes. “I don’t have a 10 year plan,” I said, as I got up to leave. “In fact,” to my own surprise, I added,  “I don’t even have a 1-year plan.”
As expected, the lady was taken aback, her eyelashes started fluttering in rapid, disappointing movements as she looked beyond me. I walked out, sad to have an opportunity, but happy nevertheless to have conveyed what I really wanted to.

My last 1-year plan didn’t work, my last 5-year plan didn’t work, and my last 10-year plan got all screwed up. I’m not a rock star today; nor am I a business tycoon. In fact, I had just walked-in for a work interview!
I never had planned traveling continents, or climbing mountains, or writing and playing sports – all of which have given me the most exhilarating moments of my . I never had even planned upon coming across the most important and wonderful people I have in my life. I never planned upon the downs that I came across in the last 10 years, nor the ups; nor upon the attitude I currently have.

And tomorrow, if I get the right position in the right shoe company, I’d live up to it with as much passion as I would when climbing a mountain, or returning a volley!

So what 10-year plan!? Or a 5-year plan for that matter!? What triviality!

Focial, are you?

Past and the Future tense

Past and the Future tense

At the barber shop..

Waiting at a barber shop is kinda cool.

There’s really nothing specific to do and you’re at your disheveled  best. Everyone is! Guess there is a Mr Disheveled contest.

Each one out there is trying to figure out something to do while to be trimmed. There’s stacks of film magazines, news papers and stuff which are not really interesting. To pass time however, there’s this mandatory exercise of flipping thru as many magazines one can get his hands on. The more picky ones would go for the newspapers, and some would also look for business newspapers… most average barber shops don’t even bother to keep them.

For me, at my average scissor shop, there’re no business newspapers and I certainly am at my dissheveled best. I might the best there is! There’s months of preparation & inertia behind it! The time when my family members start moving around me with scissors in their hands is when I realize my time is up! ‘Thou shalt go there or suffer here’!

Sitting out there with a few people, I just look out on the street – at the rickshaws, the cycles, buses, cars, vada waales, the hustle bustle of people moving about pointedly on what should be an ‘idle’ sunday afternoon. I wonder where all these people are going, what is going on in their minds, their stories, their struggles, their purpose…

I think about what causes such an infinite restlessness in an infinitesimal world. I get into a loop. I think further, I observe…

Amidst the noise, the chaos there’s so much peace. This peace is not found within the air conditioned confines of our offices, our homes. It’s only found when you spend time with yourself.

One of the polished diamonds comes out of the assembly line looking at the world in glee while pulling up his pants over his ballooned belly. His best efforts at covering his impending total baldness doesn’t seem to be working. The owner beckons me in with a wink.

My wait is over and I am about to be polished into a fine shining gem, a fine exhibit for the world. For a few months, that is!

For a permanent polish however, I’ll have to strive infinitely, consciously…

Slumbai

The dark clouds are pierced
As the nose dives
And cut by the silver wing
Appear the hues below
Of the dark abundant water
And the fresh foliage green

 Slumbai
When suddenly, off a mountain top
With the swoosh of the silver sword
The green disappears
The water vanishes
A new canvas appears
And everywhere, sliced in half
Appear those little dotted
Vastly omnipresent tarpaulins grey and blue
 Slumbai

I lean back in my seat
I close my eyes and sigh
I welcome myself
To the city of Slumbai!

Sham of a democracy!

We have elected governments in the states and in the center. And we have unelected unconstitutional powers. These powers are the real rulers of the country – for at their whims, the citizens of the
society are affected.

The government seems to have no effect on the actions of its citizens. Countless parrotted, half willed assurances from a diffident chief minister and an even weaker home minister, our elected representatives, seemed to have no effect on the business establishments and the citizens. In fact so weak do these govt
representatives appear that sometimes I wonder who needs to be protected – the citizens or the politicos themselves. They look as if they themselves are begging for help. Their faces aspires no confidence, but certainly aspires sympathies for them.

A roar of a wild lion is enough to keep citizens at bay for fear of their and their family’s security, and the strongly abled but weakly principled business houses, measured only by bottom lines, scouring
for cover.

And instead of killing the lion, nipping the roars at their bud, the elected government choses to look the other way; guess that’s vote banks at work!

Furthermore the government is also protecting the lion, all 24 hours, 365 days a year with the tax payers’ ; lest we lose a national asset! So that the lion may continue to run wild and amok, and bite and kill, and destroy the very fabric of our beliefs, the sham of a constitution, that the pseudo elected government has vowed to protect!
